As it has been attempted before, the translators of the Quran just change the meaning to match whenever scientific discoveries emerge. This blog is about to debunk the expanding universe vs Quran verse 51:47Hubble discovered the expanding universe in 1925. Due to the popularity of the concept, it ought not to surprise us that a range of Muslim exponents has as usual attempted to create links between this modern concept and certain Qur’anic statements as claimed in Quran.

Expanding Universe vs Quran

Muslims claims that the verse 51:47 talks about the expanding universe. This is not so. Muhammad is simply saying that the universe is vast and not that it is expanding. The Quranic translation of verse 51:47 before Hubble discovered the expanding universe:

“…With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of space…. ” (Surah 51:47). Yusufali

“…We have built the heaven with might, and We it is Who make the vast extent (thereof)…. ” (Surah 51:47). Pickthal

“…And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and most surely We are the makers of things ample…. ” (Surah 51:47). Shakir

The fact that the universe is vast is prosaic and obvious. There is no mention of expanding the universe in this verse. Any illiterate man could look around himself and see the world is vast. To the ancient people, even the Earth looked vast. To us, it looks very small. Some modern translators of the Quran have tried to give a scientific spin to the Quran and have translated the word continuity stating that the universe is expanding. This is not true.

Scientific Errors In The Qur’an

Did the Qur’anic authors borrow information of science from external sources?

Previous to Hubble’s discovery, the tafsir writers didn’t seem to know that the Quran said that Allah was expanding the universe. Since, when the universe was known to be expanding, the meaning of the Noble Quran changed:

Shabbir Ahmed: “And it is We Who have built the Universe, and behold, We are steadily expanding it.”

Dr  Munir Munshey: “With Our power and prowess, We brought into being the universe. And indeed, We expand it (steadily)!”

Progressive Muslims: “And We constructed the universe using matter, and We will expand it.”

Muhammad Asad: “And it is We who have built the universe with [Our creative] power; and, verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.”

Arberry: “And heaven — We built it with might, and We extend it wide.”

Sarwar: “We have made the heavens with Our own hands and We expanded it.”

Khalifah: “We constructed the sky with our hands, and we will continue to expand it.”

Hilali/Khan: “With power did We construct the heaven. Verily, We are Able to extend the vastness of space thereof.”

Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are its expander.”

Muhammad Ahmed & Samira: “And the sky/space We built/constructed it with power/support, and We are extending/spreading.”

Qaribullah: “We built the heaven with might, and We widely extended it.”

Ali Quli Qara’i: “We have built the sky with might, and indeed it is We who are its expanders.”

Ali Unal: “And the heaven, We have constructed it mightily, and it is surely We Who have vast power and keep expanding it.”

Bijan Moeinian: “I (God) have created the universe myself and will continue to expand it.”

Hamid S. Aziz: “And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and it is We that expand the vastness of space (or We are the expanders of it).”

Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali: “And the heaven (is also a sign). We have built it with (Our) Hands (i.e., Capability) and surely We are indeed extending (it) wide.”

Muhammad Taqi Usmani: “And the sky was built by Us with might, and indeed We are the expanders.”

Tahir al-Qadri: “And We built the heavenly universe with great might. And surely We are expanding (this universe) more and more.

B. Irving: “The sky We have built firmly and We are extending it.”

Al-Muntakhab: “And the heaven with its regions, spheres and realms of space did We skillfully, powerfully and authoritatively construct and We are expanding the universe.”

Quran Surah Az Zariyat 47 (QS 51: 47) in Arabic and English translation

Since the earlier English translations of Surah 51:47 do not use the word “expanding,” it is important to acknowledge that the most recent translations are hypothetical. Therefore, it is appropriate to question the translation that uses the word, “expanding.” Nevertheless, some Muslims will insist that the Qur’an does support using the word “expanding” for translation into English.

Muslims deliberately change the meaning of verses. The verse had been translated as “how great, expansive, spacious Allah is …” then when big bang turned out, they deliberately modified its meaning to reflect it. Quran pretty much consists of such changed verses. Recently, gravitational waves are discovered, and Muslims claimed “it was already told in the Quran!

The entire “scientific miracles” Muslims claim to exist in the Quran were extracted by Muslims’ manipulation of the verses after the discoveries were made. You should read a 100 years old Quran, the verses in it even defend that the earth is flat
